Google has announced significant updates to its people chips functionality in Google Sheets, introducing bulk conversion capabilities and new format options.
The platform now offers automated conversion of email data into people chips, similar to its existing dropdown chip conversion system. Users will see a "Convert to people chips" suggestion when selecting email data ranges, enabling single-click bulk conversion after preview.
Enhanced Format Options
Google has expanded the formatting options for people chips through the Format menu. Users can now choose from multiple display formats:
- Default display name
- Last name, First name
- Email address

The rollout schedule varies by domain type:
People Chip Formats
- Rapid Release domains: Currently available
- Scheduled Release domains: Gradual rollout beginning February 18, 2025, with up to 15 days for complete feature visibility
People Chip Suggestions
- Rapid Release domains: Gradual rollout starting February 6, 2025
- Scheduled Release domains: Gradual rollout initiating March 3, 2025
User Controls
Users can access the feature by typing "@" followed by a name or email address. Format adjustments can be made through the Format > Smart chips menu. For those preferring not to use this feature, it can be disabled through the Tools menu under Suggestion controls.
