European Council Approves EU AI Act; Enforcement and Compliance Stages Outlined

The European Council has approved the EU AI Act, although it is not yet enforceable. The following steps will occur:

  • The legislative act will be published in the EU’s Official Journal in the coming days.
  • 20 days post-publication, the EU AI Act will come into force and its provisions will gradually take effect.
  • After 6 months, countries will be obliged to ban prohibited AI systems.
  • A year later, regulations for general-purpose AI systems will begin to apply.
  • The entire AI Act will be enforceable two years later.

Non-compliance penalties can reach up to 35 million Euros or 7% of worldwide annual turnover.
