Google is enhancing its AI capabilities with the rollout of Gemini 2.0 for AI Overviews, which now supports more complex queries, particularly in coding, advanced math, and multimodal searches. This upgrade is aimed at improving the speed and quality of responses, and it is now accessible to a broader audience, including teens, without the need for sign-in.
A new experimental feature called AI Mode is being introduced, allowing users to engage in more advanced reasoning and multimodal interactions. This mode enables users to ask complex, multi-part questions and receive AI-powered responses, along with follow-up questions and relevant web links. AI Mode utilizes a custom version of Gemini 2.0 to facilitate deeper exploration of topics, providing a comprehensive approach to information retrieval.
The unique aspect of AI Mode lies in its integration with Google’s information systems, allowing for real-time data access and a “query fan-out” technique that aggregates results from multiple sources. This method enhances the breadth and depth of information available compared to traditional searches.
Feedback from internal testers has highlighted the speed and quality of AI Mode responses. The testing phase is being expanded to a limited, opt-in experience in Labs, where user feedback will be crucial for rapid improvements. While aiming for high-quality AI responses, Google acknowledges that early-stage AI may not always be perfect and is committed to addressing challenges as they arise.
Starting today, Google One AI Premium subscribers will be invited to participate in the Labs testing, with plans for further enhancements, including visual responses and improved content access.
