Google has announced a significant enhancement to its Gemini platform, allowing users to upload a wider variety of document types for analysis and insights. This update, effective August 27, 2024, is available to Google Workspace users with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium licenses.
Key Features of the Update
Expanded File Support
- Document and text files: TXT, DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX, and Google Docs
- Data files: XLS, XLSX, CSV, TSV, and Google Sheets
Enhanced Analysis Capabilities
- Summarization of complex subject matter
- Identification of trends and insights
- Recommendations for improving writing and document organization
Upload Sources
- Files can be uploaded from Google Drive or local devices
- Up to 10 files at a time, with a 100 MB limit per file
Important Notes
- Context-Aware Access (CAA) is not currently supported for files uploaded from Google Drive
- Google Drive access control settings are honored for file uploads
- File upload is not available when Gemini is accessed as an additional Google service
- Chats and uploaded files won't be reviewed by human reviewers or used to improve AI models when Gemini is used as a core service
Administrator Guidelines
- Local file upload is enabled by default for eligible users
- File upload from Google Drive requires enabling Workspace extensions in Gemini
- Administrators can control Gemini access for their organization through the Help Center
