Perplexity AI has introduced a new feature called Perplexity Pages, which allows users to turn their searches into shareable, visually appealing web pages. This feature aims to help users create reports, articles, or guides with formatted images and sections.
Key Features
- Creation Process: Users can create a page by entering a prompt, such as "Information about Sahara Desert." They can also select an audience type (beginner, advanced, or anyone) to shape the tone of the generated text.
- Customization: The AI tool can create detailed articles with different sections, which users can rewrite, reformat, or remove. Users can also add sections by prompting the tool to write about specific subtopics.
- Media Integration: Perplexity Pages allows users to find and insert relevant media items like images and videos.
- Shareability: These pages are publishable and searchable through Google. Users can share links to these pages, and others can ask follow-up questions on the topic.
- Conversion of Threads: Users can turn their existing conversation threads into pages with a click of a button.
User Experience
Henry Modisett, Perplexity’s head of design, noted that the AI engine starts answering questions and forming the page instantly, but it takes a couple of minutes to complete. The design challenge was to make the waiting experience pleasant for users.
Human Element
Modisett emphasized that while the AI generates content, users curate the information, making decisions about the page's content and organization. This human aspect ensures that not all pages are purely AI-generated.
Availability
The Perplexity Pages feature is initially available to a limited number of users, with plans to roll it out to all users eventually. Currently, users can create pages on the web, but they are visible on both the web and mobile apps.
Future Implications
There are ongoing discussions about how AI-generated content will impact blogging, journalism, and the web. Perplexity sees this tool as a means of information curation rather than pure content generation. The feature includes different sources prominently, similar to Perplexity search results.
