Claude has introduced Cowork, a new tool designed to extend the capabilities of Claude Code beyond developers to anyone needing assistance with non-coding tasks. Available now as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS, Cowork allows users to give Claude access to a specific folder on their computer, enabling it to read, edit, or create files directly. This lets Claude perform tasks like organizing downloads, creating spreadsheets from screenshots, or drafting reports from scattered notes with more autonomy than in a regular conversation.
How Cowork Works
Cowork builds on the foundations of Claude Code but is tailored for non-developer use. Once assigned a task, Claude plans and executes it while keeping the user informed. Users can also enhance Cowork’s functionality by integrating existing connectors that link Claude to external data sources and by using new skills for creating documents and presentations. When paired with Claude in Chrome, Cowork can even perform tasks requiring browser access.
The interface is designed for simplicity and efficiency: users don’t need to repeatedly provide context or reformat outputs. Multiple tasks can be queued and worked on in parallel, making the interaction feel more like collaborating with a coworker than a back-and-forth chat.
User Control and Safety
Users maintain control by explicitly choosing which folders and connectors Claude can access. Claude asks for confirmation before taking significant actions, allowing users to guide or correct its work. However, users should be cautious because Claude can perform potentially destructive actions, such as deleting files, if instructed. Clear instructions are important to avoid mistakes.
There is also a risk of “prompt injections,” where malicious content could alter Claude’s behavior. Although defenses against such attacks are in place, securing Claude’s real-world actions remains an ongoing challenge in the AI industry. These risks are not new but are more relevant as users engage with more advanced tools like Cowork. Users are advised to take precautions and consult the Help Center for guidance.
Future Plans and Availability
Cowork is currently a research preview aimed at gathering user feedback to guide improvements. Planned enhancements include cross-device synchronization, Windows support, and increased safety features. Claude Max subscribers can access Cowork now via the macOS app, while others can join a waitlist for future access. The developers encourage experimentation to discover new use cases and capabilities.
